postheadericon Casual Lobotomy: The iPod Is Destroying My Brain

Similarly, as my recent swearing off digital photography as a hobby, I retired my iPod.Razlog is simple. It was destroying my brain

Technically speaking, I was destroying my brain, because I was willing participant in this disaster, but the convenience, long battery life, ease of use, massive storage for the iPod offers made it too easy to abuse me for something I love music.

I notice it in time, but did not act on it, the fact that my free time for thought was filled with the songs stuck in my head like Muzak in an elevator ride to the fifth ring of hell. Try to think of something to write? Music. Sitting quietly in bed with my girlfriend? Music. Trying to remember the words in a foreign language? Music. Why do I always hear music in my head, replaying someone else's thoughts, instead of creating your own?

At the very least, I was listening to more than 8 hours a day, five days a week, for almost 10 years, often while sitting at a table at work, for relatively menial, repetitive tasks. Of course, the music did not help pass the time, but the downside is that all of these songs became burned into my brain. Because music is mostly sucked these past 10 years, I found myself listening to the same bands and the same songs over and over again. And now, in my waking hours, these songs appear in the first moment of interruption, as well as some aural sex spank bank.

Perhaps this is what sadistic employer really wants: for you to do repetitive work and lose their minds, so they always have someone who can do these tasks and be happy that they got to listen to music during the day because as leisurely a lobotomized. Thus, they encourage you to listen to music on your table, because, as May and they say, "I do not mind." Of course it does not matter, they are running a magnet for your brain and delete your data, all in exchange for a few moments of audio enjoyment.

Once I was able to actually think about it, I was surprised that the music was decaying my brain. We just do not think about music as something that can be harmful for us. After all, it is the music. If you have smoked cigarettes or drank or got high for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, people would think that a big problem, or ask to hang out with you. Yet somehow, listening to music for 40 + hours a week - when you're in the music industry - is perfectly acceptable and encouraged. In fact, people carry their iPod and listen to music because they are on public transport, private transport, in shops, stores, run, walk on, sex, sex with oneself: it has become perfectly socially acceptable to be addicted to music, partly because it's easier than ever to listen to any song you want, at any time, anywhere. (And partly because nobody wants to listen to you anyway .)

It's not too late to stop the broken record in your head. Put your ear buds away and buy a record player.
